Read: 1 Peter 3:8-22
Peter’s second portion of chapter 3, after talking about husbands and wives has a phrase that most Christian churches and families need to hear time and time again: “have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” If I had a nickel for every time I have not performed these simple tasks, I would not need a job.
But that is the simple problem of Peter’s words: having unity of mind is not a simple task. That is why Peter has to describe it further: “Let this person turn away from evil and do good; Let this person seek peace and pursue it.” The best way to do this is: “ to honor Christ the LORD as holy.” In other words, Peter is saying to his hearers and to us: If you call yourself a Christian, you should act like a Christian. Christians agree that Christ is LORD over the earth, over our lives, and over our sufferings. He is allowed to make this claim because Christ also suffered once for all of the sins of the unrighteous. We have been made different because of our baptism into Christ.
Christ did some amazing things while He was here on earth. However, He has done some amazing things since then too. He preached to the spirits, He saved Noah and his family from the flood, He has gone into heaven to rule over all of creation. That is our Savior. That is the one in whom we put our trust and hope. No matter what our life looks like now, we know that in the future, we will be with Him and the Father. That is the one, united mind that we need to have as Christians. Our lives matter because Christ has given them to us, but we also offer ourselves as living sacrifices to Him - to achieve His purposes on earth until He comes again. That gives us good reason to have a tender heart and a humble mind.
Please pray: Dear Jesus, You are truly LORD of all. Even though You are almighty in power, we give you thanks for loving us, your creation. Sometimes we do not understand what we suffer here on earth. However, we submit to Your will and trust you always. Forgive us for not always understanding and sometimes doubting. Remain being our rock at all times. For it is only through You that we can hope to enjoy salvation. Amen.

La segunda sección de capítulo 3, después de hablar de las responsabilidades en el matrimonio, tiene una frase que la mayoridad de iglesias y familias necesitan oír muchas veces: “sed todos de un mismo sentir: compasivos, amándoos fraternalmente, misericordiosos y humildes.” Si yo tuviera una moneda por todas las veces que no había hecho estas tareas, no necesitaría un puesto.
Pero el problema simple de las palabras de Pedro es: el ser de mismo sentir no es simple. Por eso, Pedro tuvo que describirlo más: “Apártese del mal y haga bien. Busque la pas y sígala.” La mejor manera de hacerlo es: “no seáis turbados, más bien, santificad en vuestros corazones a Cristo como SEÑOR.” En otras palabras, Pedro nos dice: si te llamas Cristiano, actúa así. Los Cristianos están de acuerdo que Cristo es SEÑOR sobre la tierra, sobre nuestras vidas, sobre nuestros sufrimientos. Él está permitido hacer este dicho porque Cristo también sufrió por todos los pecados de los injustos. Hemos sido cambiados por nuestro bautismo en Cristo.
Jesucristo hizo cosas extraordinarias aquí por la tierra. Sin embargo, Él ha hecho cosas extraordinarias desde entonces también: Él predicó a los espíritus, Él salvó a Noé y su familia de la inundación, Él ha regresado a los cielos para reinar por toda de su creación. Ése es nuestro Salvador. Ése es él en quien ponemos nuestra confianza y esperanza. Pase lo que pase con nuestras vidas, sabemos que en el future, estaremos con Él y nuestro Padre Celestial. Nuestas vidas tienen significación porque Cristo nos las ha dado, pero también nos ofrecemos como sacrificios vivos a Él - para que Sus propósitos por la tierra pasen hasta que regrese otra vez. Éso nos da una razón buena para ser misericordiosos y humildes.
Favor de orar: Querido Jesús, de verdad, Tú eres el SEÑOR de todo. Aunque eres todopoderoso, te demos gracias por amarnos, Tu creación. A veces no entendemos lo que sufrimos aquí por la tierra. Sin embargo, nos sometemos a Tu voluntad y confiamos en Ti para siempre. Perdónanos por las veces que no entendamos y por dudar a veces. Sigue de ser nuestra roca por todo. Porque es sólo por Ti que podemos esperar la alabanza de salvación. Amén.
