Daily Devotional - Passion Tuesday
Read: Matthew 22:23-46
Before Jesus goes to trial, He is questioned by the Sadducees and the Pharisees. They are trying to give Jesus complicated questions in order to trick Him. Trying to trick God is the one of the sure signs that you are not with God. They ask Him these questions about who marries whom, and what is the greatest commandment. The process of questioning is not as important as Jesus’s answers.
Jesus says that God is the God of the living. There is a reason why the Sadducees were asking Jesus about the resurrection. Some of them had heard from Jesus’s own mouth that he would rise again after death. None of the Sadducees wanted to believe that was true. It was against their doctrine. Jesus knew what He would have to endure on the cross and through His sufferings. It would not be pretty. However, He also knew what would happen afterwards, on Easter morning. That would be beautiful. That is why Jesus says that God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. God does not desire our death. He desires us to the live in Him eternally.
Jesus also says what the greatest commandments are: “to love the LORD your God with all of your heart, and all of your soul, and with all of your mind…you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” These words from Jesus can sound harsh because we cannot complete them. However, they can also sound beautiful to us because as Christians that is what love means - to love God and love our neighbors. No matter how it makes you feel, the truth remains: God is love. His followers should abide in His love, back toward God and toward others.
In the next section, it is Jesus’s turn to ask the questions. He asks the Pharisees how it is possible for Jesus to be Son of God and yet Son of David. They cannot respond. Neither could we. The answer is of course both are true. Jesus was telling the people that not only was He one of them, but He was also God. It is in this way that He was able to make the ultimate sacrifice for us and for all of creation. No one dared ask Him any more questions.
Please pray: Dear Jesus: Forgive us for questioning Your mercy and love. Forgive us for always wanting to know everything. Send your Holy Spirit upon us to simply trust in You and in Your Words for us in Matthew: You are the God of the living, You love us, and You are our God. These phrases sound simple, but sometimes they are hard for us. Keep us steadfast in your word, in prayer, and in love towards one another. Amen.

Antes de que Jesús va al juicio, los Saduceos y Fariseos les interroga. Quieren darle a Jesús preguntas complicadas para engañarle. El intento de engañar a Dios es un señal seguro de que no están con Dios. Le interroga con preguntas de quién se casa a quién, y cuál es el gran mandamiento. El proceso de interrogar a Jesús no es tan importante como sus respuestas.
Jesús dice que Dios es el Dios de vivos. Hay razón que los Saduceos interrogan a Jesús sobre la resurrección. Algunos de ellos han oído de la propia boca de Jesús que resucitaría otra vez después de la muerte. Ningunos de los Saduceos querían caer que era la verdad. Era contra de su doctrina. Jesús sabía lo que tendría que soportar por la cruz y por sus sufrimientos. No sería bonito. Sin embargo, Él también sabía lo que pasaría por la mañana de Pascua. Ésto será bonito! Por eso, Jesús dice que Dios no es el Dios de la muerte. Dios no desea nuestra muerte. Él desea que vivamos con Él eternamente.
Jesús también dice lo que son los mandamientos grandes: “amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente…amarás a tu prójimo con a ti mismo.: Estas palabras de Jesús pueden sonar severo porque no las podemos completar. Sin embargo, pueden sonar bonitas también porque sabemos lo que significa el amor - para amar a Dios a y nuestros prójimos. No significa como sientes, la verdad permanece: Dios es amor. Sus discípulos deben permanecer en Su amor, a Dios y a los demás.
En la próxima sección, es la toca de Jesús para interrogar. Él pregunta a los Fariseos como es posible que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios y hijo de David. No podían responder. Ni podíamos nosotros. La respuesta por supuesto es que los dos son la verdad. Jesús dice a la gente que no era sólo humano sino también Dios. Es por esta manera que podía sacrificarse para nosotros y por toda la creación. Nadie se atrevió desde aquel día a preguntarle más.
Favor de orar: Querido Jesús: Perdónanos por interrogar Tu misericordia y Tu amor. Perdónanos por siempre querer todo. Manda Tu Espíritu Santo sobre nosotros que confiemos simplemente en Ti y en Tus palabras para nosotros en Mateo: Tú eres el Dios de vivos, Tù nos ama, y Tú eres nuestro Dios. Estas frases suenan simples, pero a veces son difíciles para nosotros. Mantennos en Tu palabra y en amor para uno al otro. Amén.
