Daily Devotional - Passion Saturday
Read: Psalm 22
Years and years before Jesus was born, David wrote this psalm. You may remember the times that David had to flee from Saul, who was trying to kill him. You can hear the anguish in David’s words. It is easy for us to connect this Psalm to Jesus. However, try to reflect upon it while focusing on David’s trouble. What words do you find that you can connect to different sections of the Bible? What in particular makes you think of specific verses. For example: verse 9 reminds me of Psalm 139 - “For You knitted me together in my mother’s womb”.
Now reread the Psalm. This time, focus on the words as they reflect the story of Jesus during Holy Week. The Gospels are silent about what happened to Jesus on Saturday because it was the holy day for the Jews. Instead, we look toward the Psalm that Jesus quoted from the cross in Matthew’s Gospel. What verses make you think about Jesus’s experience on the cross? For example, verse 17 reminds me about the prophesy that none of Jesus’s bones would be broken. Instead, all of His bones remained in tact.
Now reread the Psalm again. This time, focus on the words as they reflect the truth that we know is coming tomorrow, on Easter Sunday. Passion Saturday is an odd time for Christians. We often want to be sad because of what happened yesterday, but we also remember what will happen tomorrow. What do you see in this Psalm to remind you of today? I can hear the words of all of the great Easter hymns when I read verse 22: “In the midst of the congregation I will praise You.” I like that line because it is in the future tense. It will be happening tomorrow. Maybe not together, but in our hearts, we will be praising Jesus for His glorious resurrection.

Please pray: Dear Jesus: As we remember your rest in the tomb on this Passion Saturday, we confess that we do not spend as much time with You as we should. Enrich us through the power of Your Holy Spirit to dwell with You in grace and truth. Now that we have more time, instill in us a desire to actually study Your Word instead of simply reading it. Give us connections to You, for You are our heart’s desire. Amen.

David escribió este salmo años y años antes de que nació Jesús. Se puede acordar las veces que David tenía que huir de Saul, quien quería matarle. Se puede oír el angustio en las palabras de David. Es fácil para nosotros que conectemos este salmo a Jesús. Sin embargo, intenta de reflexionarlo mientras te enfoques en el peligro de David. Qué palabras encuentras que conectes a secciones diferentes de la Biblia? Qué específicamente hace que pienses de versículos distintos? Por ejemplo, en versículo 9 me acuerda de Salmo 139: “porque Tú me entretejiste en el vientre de mi madre.”
Ahora, lee el Salmo otra vez. Esta vez, fíjate en las palabras como reflexionan la historia de Jesús durante la Semana Santa. Los Evangelios están quietos de lo que pasó a Jesús este Sábado porque era el día santo de los judíos. En vez, nos enfocamos en el Salmo que Jesús citó de la cruz en el Evangelio de Mateo. Qué versículos hace que pienses sobre la experiencia de Jesús por la cruz. Por ejemplo, versículo 17 me acuerda de la profesía de ningunos de los huesos de Jesús serán rotos. En vez, todos de sus huesos se quedaron enteros.
Ahora, relee el Salmo otra vez. Esta vez, fíjate en las palabras como reflexionan de la verdad que sabemos que viene mañana, el Pascua. El Sábado de la Pasión puede confundir al Cristiano. A menudo queremos estar tristes po lo que pasó el Viernes, pero también nos acordamos lo que pasará mañana. Que ves en el Salmo para acordarte de hoy? Puedo oír las palabras de los himnos grandes de Pascua cuando leo versículo 22: “Anunciaré tu nombre a mis hermanos; en medio de la congregación te alabaré.” Lo que me encanta de esta línea es que está en el tiempo futuro. Pasará mañana. Aunque no estaremos juntos, pero en nuestros corazones, alabaremos a Jesús por su resurrección gloriosa.

Favor de orar: Querido Jesus: Como nos acordamos tu descanso en la tumba este Sábado de la Pasión, confesamos que no pasamos tanto tiempo contigo como debemos. Enriquécenos por el poder de Tu Espíritu Santo para que vivamos en Tu gracia y en Tu verdad. Ahora que tenemos más tiempo, infúndenos un deseo para estudiar Tu palabra de verdad en vez de solo leerla. Danos las conexiones a Ti, porque Tú eres el deseo de nuestros corazones. Amén.
