Daily Devotion - Passion Monday
Read: Matthew 21:18-46
The events leading up to Maundy Thursday are strange. In the book of Matthew, Jesus tells multiple parables all about the end of the world. Usually we read these parables at the end of the church year. It is odd that Jesus curses a fig tree when it is not the season for figs. Then he goes on about having faith and moving mountains. As far as I know, no one has ever moved a mountain because of their faith. There is no mention in the Bible about Moses or Elijah moving a mountain and throwing it into the sea. We should not fear that our faith does not do such things.
Jesus refuses to answer the chief priests and the elders of the people about where He got His authority. He doesn’t answer them because he knows that they already know who He is. Never in the history of Israel has this ever happened. And it will never happen again. So Jesus continues with a parable teaching us that it isn’t necessarily what we say, but it is what we do that matters. Do we say that we follow God or do we actually follow Him?
Finally, Jesus tells a parable about Himself. He would be sent to earth in order to die. He confesses to them all that He is the cornerstone on which our faith is built. Matthew records that the Pharisees knew that they were the ones from whom God’s favor would be taken. The everyday people knew. It is the same today: people who are supposed to be in the know, simply don’t know about Jesus or what He has done for them. But the everyday people, you and me, we believe that Jesus has come to save the world and all of creation.
As we prepare for the astonishing events of Passion Week, remember to observe the actions of Christ. Yesterday, He was praised. Today He was trying to get everyone to say out loud who He really was, the Son of God who has come into the world in order to save it.
Please Pray: Dear Jesus: thank you for entering into Jerusalem yesterday, and teaching today so many years ago. As we reflect upon Your actions this week, remind us of all the love you have for all of mankind and for all of your creation. Thank you for enduring the questions and being patient with us as we desire to understand you better. Send Your Holy Spirit upon us we pray and enlighten our hearts to your message. Amen.
Devocional Cotidiana - El lunes de la Pasión
Los acontecimientos que llevan al jueves de la pasión son raros. Según Mateo, Jesús dice muchas paláboras del fin del mundo. Normalmente las leemos al fin del año eclesiástico. Es extraño que Jesús maldice una higuera cuando no es la temporada para los higos. Entonces sigue de no tener la fe y de mover los montes. Hasta que yo sepa, nadie ha movido un monte por su fe. No hay mención en la Biblia sobre Moisés ni Elīas moviendo un monte y arrojándolo al mar. No debemos temer que nuestra fe no hace estas cosas.
Jesús rehusa contestar los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo sobre dónde recibió su autoridad. No les contesta porque ya sabe que ellos saben quién es. Nunca en la historia de Israel lo había pasado y nunca pasará otra vez. Así Jesús continua con otra parábola que nos enseña que no es necesariamente lo que decimos sino lo que hacemos que vale. Sólo decimos que venimos en pos de Êl o actualmente lo venimos?
Finalmente, Jesús relata una parábola sobre Sí mismo. Sería mandado a la tierra para morir. Confiesa a todos que Él es la cabeza del ángulo en la cual nuestra fe será construida. Mateo escribe que la gente normal sabía. Es lo mismo hoy en día: la gente que deben saber simplemente no conocen a Jesús o lo que ha hecho para ellos. Pero, la gente normal, tú y yo, creemos que Jesús ha venido para salvar al mundo y toda de Su creación.
Mientras preparamos nuestros corazones para los acontecimientos increíbles de la Semana Santa, recuerda observar las acciones de Cristo. Ayer, fue alabado. Hoy intentó otra vez de hacer a la gente que confiese quién era, el Hijo de Dios quien ha venido a la tierra para salvarla.
Favor de orar: Querido Jesús: gracias por enterar a Jerusalén ayer, y por enseñar hoy tantos años en el pasado. Como reflejamos sobre Tus acciones esta semana, recuérdanos de todo el amor que tienes para toda la humanidad y por toda Su creación. Gracias por aguantar las preguntas y por ser paciente con nosotros mientras deseamos comprenderte mejor. Manda Tu Espíritu Santo sobre nosotros, y brilla Tu luz sobre nuestros corazones para oír Tu mensaje. Amén.
