Daily Devotion - Passion Wednesday
Read: Matthew 26:1-16
The Passover is coming. On our calendar, the Passover will be happening on Friday, what we call Good Friday, when the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified. These words come from Jesus’s very mouth. He tells the disciples exactly when His death will be. He tells them exactly what is going to happen, He will be crucified.
That knowledge is hard for the disciples (and us) to take in. However, an unnamed woman got it. We don’t know exactly who she is from the account in Matthew. But she knew that Jesus would make the ultimate sacrifice for you, me, and everyone on earth. She anointed Jesus with a very expensive ointment. What it is doesn’t matter so much. Rather, what matters is that she was sacrificing it, as her firstfruit offering to Jesus. He calls it a beautiful thing. Jesus is foreshadowing what was going to happen. He will have to die and be buried in order to fulfill God’s plan for salvation. We proclaim this in the Apostle’s Creed. If you haven’t said it recently as part of your devotions, say it right now. Focus on the second article (the lines about Jesus). It tells the whole story of what Jesus had to do to secure our salvation and eternal life.
In just a few, short verses, Matthew records the story of Judas Iscariot, and how he planned to hand Jesus over to the chief priests. For such a low sum of 30 pieces of silver, a couple months’ wages, to kill the Son of God. Imagine how troubled Judas must have been. The Greek for “deliver” is to “give up”. Judas was giving Jesus up to those that would betray Him.
Today’s reading seems bleak. We have crucifixion, burial, and betrayal. But we cannot forget, this is just Wednesday of Holy Week. Things will get much worse for Jesus. When we read how awful Jesus’s situation was, we need to remember that He suffered everything for us. He could have not gone through what He did. Instead, He endured it all for the love of us.
Please Pray: Dear Jesus, your love astounds us. As the woman in the reading today, we offer what we have for Your glory. Remind us that all of the blessings we have are from You. Everything we own is truly Yours. We ask that you prepare our hearts and minds for the story of Your Passion. We look to You, Dearest Jesus for all of our hope. Amen.
Devocional Cotidiana - El Miércoles de la Pasión

La Pascua viene. En nuestro calendario, la pascua (el día celebrado por los Judíos) pasa el Viernes, cuando el Hijo del Hombre va a ser entregado para ser crucificado. Estas palabras vienen de la boca de Jesús. Él dijo a sus discípulos exactamente cuando será su muerte. Él les dijo exactamente lo que pasará, será crucificado.
Esta sabiduría es difícil para los discípulos (y para nosotros) que entendamos. Sin embargo, la mujer sin nombre entendió. No le conocimos según Mateo. Pero ella sabía que Jesús haría el sacrificio último para ti, para mí, y para todo el mundo. Ella ungió a Jesús con perfume de gran precio. Lo que era no vale. Lo que vale es que ella lo sacrificó, como una ofrenda de primicia a Jesús. Él lo llama: “una buena obra”. Jesús anunció lo que pasaría. En pocos versículos, Mateo cuenta la lectura de Judas Iscariote, y como planeó entregar Jesús a los principales sacerdotes. Por la cuesta menor de treinta piezas de plata, un salario de un par de meses para matar al Hijo de Dios. Imagínate como inquieto era Judas. El griego para “entregar” es “ceder”. Judas cedió a Jesús a los que le entregaría.
Las lecturas para hoy nos parecen sombríos. Tenemos la crucifixión, la tumba, y un entregado. Pero no podemos olvidarnos que sólo es el Miércoles de la Semana Santa. Las cosas empeorarán para Jesús. Cuando leemos de la situación desolada de Jesús, es necesario que nos acordemos que sufrió todo par nosotros. Tenía la opción de no sufrir tanto. En vez, aguantó todo para amarnos.
Favor de orar: Querido Jesús: tu amor nos sorprende. Como la mujer en la lección de hoy, ofrecemos lo que tenemos a Tu gloria. Recuérdanos que todas las bendiciones que tenemos son de Ti. Todo lo que tenemos es Tuyo. Te pedimos que prepares nuestros corazones y nuestras mentes para la historia de Tu Pasión. Recurrimos a Ti, Querido Jesucristo, para toda de nuestra esperanza. Amén.
