Read: 1 Peter 1:13-25
This reading can be a bit confusing. We have to get two things straight: 1) Peter asks his readers to conduct themselves with fear throughout the time of their exile. This is a holy fear - a fear that trusts that God is in control of everything, NOT an afraid fear of God. 2) The “former ignorance” that Peter refers to is that of unbelief in God.
Peter also references the famous phrase from Leviticus: “You all shall be holy, for I am holy.” As believers in God and as people whose faith is cemented in Christ, God has called us to act like Him, to be holy. God also knows that such aspirations are impossible for us. That is why Peter proceeds to talk about how we have been ransomed with the precious blood of Christ. “Ransomed” is a doctrinal word that means “bought back” or “purchased at a great price”. God purchased us back from sin with the precious blood of Christ, the perfect lamb that had no blemish of sin. God foreknew this would happen. God also foreknew that our souls would be purified in this way.
Because we have been bought back from sin by Christ, we know that our inheritance is with God, our inheritance is not the earth. So when we see our society crumbling before our eyes, there is nothing for us to fear…because the word of the LORD remains forever. This is the Good News that was preached to us by Peter and all of the prophets before him. So going back to the beginning, prepare your minds for action. Set your hope fully on the grace that is brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Through Christ, we are made holy. That is truly good news!
Please pray: Dear Heavenly Father, You have called us to be holy. We know that is only possible through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank you for not forgetting us and leaving us in our sin. Thank you for giving us a great inheritance in You. Make us sober-minded in our actions and in our faith - always trusting in Your Word for us, because it remains forever. Amen.

Esta lectura puede ser confusa. Es necesario clarificar dos cosas: 1) Pedro pide a sus oyentes que se conduzca en temor todo el tiempo de su peregrinación. Es un temor sagrado - un temor que confía que Dios está en control de todo, NO es un temor de miedo de Dios. 2) La “ignorancia” que Pedro refiere es la de no creer en Dios.
Pedro también refiere a la frase famosa de Levítico: “Sed santos, porque Yo Soy santo.” Como creyentes en Dios y como la gente cuya fe está cementada en Cristo, Dios nos ha llamado actuar como Él, ser santo. Dios sabe que tanta aspiración es imposible para nosotros. Por eso, Pedro prosigue hablar de como hemos sido rescatados con la sangre sagrada de Cristo. “Rescatar” es más claro en español que en inglés. Hemos sido rescatado con la sangre preciosa de Cristo, el cordero perfecto sin mancha y sin contaminación. Fue destinado desde ante de la fundación del mundo, y Dios lo sabía.
Porque hemos sido rescatados de pecado por Cristo, sabemos que nuestra herencia está con Dios, nuestra herencia no está por la tierra. Así cuando vemos nuestra sociedad desmenuzando antes de nuestros ojos, no hay nada para temer…porque permanece la palabra del Señor. Esta es la palabra del Evangelio que os ha sido anunciada por Pedro y todos los profetas antes de él. Así, regresar al comienzo de la lectura, prepara la mente para actuar. Pone tu esperanza completamente en la gracia que os es traída en la revelación de Jesucristo. Por Cristo, estamos hechos santos. Ésta es buenas noticias!
Favor de orar: Querido Padre Celestial, Tú nos ha llamado ser santo. Sabemos que solo es posible por Tu Hijo, Jesucristo. Gracias por no olvidarnos ni dejarnos en nuestro pecado. Gracias por darnos una herencia en Ti. Haznos que seamos sobrios en nuestras acciones y en nuestra fe - siempre confiando en Tu Palabra para nosotros, porque permanece para siempre. Amén.
